FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

SHOULD I BOOK PRIVATE LESSONS OR A BOARD AND LEARN?

Success in dog training and behavior modification is repetition, consistency, and application! Deciding what package you and your dog would benefit from, either private lessons or a board and learn, comes down to two things. Your dog's behavioral issues and/or the lifestyle and availability of your family.

Board and Learn programs are incredible for achieving obedience training, behavior modification, and solid results with your dog in a few short weeks.  During your dog's stay I do a lot of the "heavy lifting" by working your dog multiple times per day, teaching basic obedience, off-leash e-collar training, socialization with other dogs/people/animals, and in some cases behavior modification.  Your dog is worked daily around distractions (like other dogs, public places, and new people) which is a substantial part of the "real world success" of this program.  I do this for a living, your dog's behavior, obedience, and improvement is top priority everyday!  When your dog goes home, they will have their obedience training foundation and new, calmer, tuned in, obedient, and more polite state of mind--as an owner, you just have to apply the training and follow through (they already know it, you just keep with it everyday) I supply you with after training protocols and I am always available to you if you have any questions. Severe behavior modification such as any aggression towards other dogs or people are strictly a 5-8 week board and learn and on a case by case basis; if you have questions about this, please feel free to contact me!

Private lessons are an opportunity for you and your dog to learn together at the same time! YOU essentially become the dog trainer, because once a week we work together for an hour (you become the teacher at home).  After our lessons you become the dog trainer as you teach, proof, and apply the things that we have covered with your dog during the week.  The success of your dog's training lies in your ability to practice training, setting boundaries, and following the rules I give you multiple times daily. Ultimately you have the opportunity to have a dog with precision behaviors and obedience (similar to what they would achieve in a board and learn with me) in a matter of 4-8 weeks as long as you put in the work!  The more time and challenges you dedicate to your dog's training, the better the results will be!  Remember, it's your effort that makes or breaks your dog's success.  Because many people work full time jobs, and have very busy lifestyles that don't lend themselves to training an hour or so per day, the Board and Learn becomes a great option.  With that being said, if you have the time and are willing to put in the work, private lessons may be a good fit for you!

The most important thing is that we match you with the program that is best for you and your dog.

DO YOU USE FOOD AND PRAISE IN YOUR TRAINING?

My training system is reward based through inclusion in daily activities, gentle praise, and building a working relationship together.  We also utilize the dogs daily kibble as a great reward and motivator. Kindred DOG PDX takes a balanced approach to dog training by creating CALM dogs with a relaxed state-of-mind.  We do that through leadership, duration work, lots of repetition/practice, and calm-consistent commands/expectations.

WHY DON'T YOU TEACH THE "STAY" COMMAND?

We don’t teach the "stay" command because it's built in with the the commands: sit, down, and place! Instead of teaching an extra command, we teach our dogs that sit, down, and place also means to stay in that position until released. Our training is not about tricks, but is all about duration and the true meaning of the command. We expect our dogs to stay in the commands for long periods of time if we need them to. By training this way, we teach our dog to relax in all types of situations by having a calm state of mind.

WHAT TOOLS DO YOU USE?

Part of being a balanced trainer is familiarizing yourself with as many tools as possible.  With that said, we find it very important to have a large arsenal of tools in our toolbox, and we believe there is no one size fits all approach to dog training. Some of the tools we use are herm sprenger training collars,  remote collars, slip leads, pet convincers (compressed air for interrupting behavior), treats, toys, and long lines. Our goal is to achieve a calm, relaxed, tuned in, happy, and obedient dog!

WHY DO YOU USE HERM SPRENGER TRAINING COLLARS?

We use herm sprenger training collars because we find them to be the best tool for connecting, communicating, and creating a balanced relationship with the least amount of physical stress to the dog and owner. Most tools tend to only mask or manage the behavior, while the prong collar allows us to actually break through and effortlessly communicate to the dog, creating a vastly different state of mind and a highly responsive dog. While prong collars tend to have a bad wrap, when used correctly, they have been proven to be the least physically taxing, most humane, and one of the safest tools available. Check out our training video here!

WHY DO YOU USE REMOTE COLLARS?

Modern remote collar training is the most effective, most reliable, most humane, and transformation training available today.

HOW DO YOU TRAIN WITH A REMOTE COLLAR?

We use low-level, PRESSURE ON/PRESSURE OFF modern  remote collar training, which looks nothing like the e-collar training of the past. Check out our training video here!

MY DOG IS FEARFUL AND NERVOUS. I SHOULDN'T USE A REMOTE COLLAR WITH HIM, RIGHT?

Actually, modern remote collar training is the best training for dogs with these types of issues. Our remote collar training system is designed to create more confident, relaxed, and comfortable dogs.

See more about remote collars here.

MY DOG IS REALLY AGGRESSIVE. DO YOU WORK WITH AGGRESSIVE DOGS?

It depends. While we will do our best to work with you and your dog, if we cannot help, we can get you in touch with someone who can.

WILL I GET TO SEE MY DOG DURING THE BOARD AND LEARN?

We will determine if owner participation is appropriate or helpful to the program. In most cases, however, we find owner participation counterproductive to the rehabilitation and training process.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T GET THE RESULTS I WANT FROM THE TRAINING? IS THERE A GUARANTEE?

Due to the many variables involved to create a well-behaved, balanced dog, including owner commitment, consistency, and follow-through, it would be unethical for us to offer a 100% guarantee. However, we only choose the most dedicated and diligent owners so, in our experience, no matter how severe the issues, we consistently see breakthrough results and amazing transformations. We have never come across a dog we could not help. We work hand in hand as a team in your dog’s rehabilitation. This process of teamwork and collaboration begins before we even meet your dog, moves through the training process, and continues long after your dog has gone home. Once you hire us, we consider you part of the Kindred Dog PDX family, and your success is our utmost priority.
